CLEVELAND, Ohio – Much like the weather in northeast Ohio, the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team was ice cold, scoring a season-low 38 points on 25.9 percent shooting from the field in a 63-38 loss to No. 8/9 nationally-ranked Washington University-St. Louis on Friday at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans drop to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the University Athletic Association with their second-straight top-10 opponent, No. 2 University of Chicago (Ill.), coming to town on Sunday, January 15 for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. The Bears improve to 11-2 and 1-1 in the UAA.

Washington jumped out to an early 6-0 lead when Claire Schaeperkoetter hit a jumper at 17:30, but the Spartans scored the next five and pulled within one when junior guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) drilled a three-pointer at 15:56. Play then went back-and-forth over the ensuing five minutes before the Spartans once again got within one as senior forward Erin Hollinger (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) hit a triple to bring the score to 12-11 with 10:03 left in the half. The Bears were then able to finish the period on a 16-8 run, with Schaeperkoetter providing the final basketball on a three-pointer at 2:25, making the score 28-19.

The Spartans never got going in the second half as Washington opened on a 15-0 run that increased the deficit to 24, at 43-19, with 14:43 left to play. A three-pointer by Hollinger at 13:24 broke the run and a 9:19 scoreless stretch.

For the game, Iacono led the Spartans with seven points, while freshman guard Destinee Henton (Mason, Ohio/Mason) totaled four points and six rebounds – five of which came on the offensive glass.

Melissa Gilkey and Schaeperkoetter finished in double-figures for the Bears with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Bears held a 30-8 scoring advantage in the paint.
