Cleveland, Ohio, January 13, 2012 - The No. 8 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team limited Case Western Reserve University to season-low 25.9 shooting and forced 20 turnovers in a 63-38 victory on Friday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

Freshman Melissa Gilkey led all scorers with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line, while senior Claire Schaeperkoetter added 13 points on 3-of-7 from three-point range. The Bears shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the field and hit 10-of-14 from the free-throw line in the win.

Washington U.'s defense suffocated Case Western Reserve in the opening nine minutes of the game, limiting Case to 2-of-13 shooting from the field. A put-back by senior Brianne Monahan, who was playing in her first game since Nov. 26, gave Washington U. a 10-5 lead at the 12:46 mark.

A three-pointer by Schaeperkoetter pushed the lead to 21-15, and then back-to-back buckets from Gilkey and freshman Alyssa Johanson pushed the advantage to 25-17. Schaeperkoetter drained her second triple of the half with 2:25 left to make it 28-19 of the half. Case had one field goal in the final seven minutes of the first half.

Schaeperkoetter led all scorers with 10 points in the first half, as the Bears shot 44 percent (11-25) from the field. The Bears defense limited Case to 24.1 percent shooting (7-29) and turned six turnovers into eight points.

Washington U. made five of its first six shots from the field to open the second half on a 15-0 run to put the game out of reach. Junior Annie Sayers had five points and Gilkey added four during the decisive run. Case Western Reserve missed it first seven shots of the second half and turned the ball over six times in the opening six minutes.

Washington University (11-2, 1-1 UAA) concludes a two-game road trip at Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday, Jan. 15. Game time is set for 2 p.m. (ET) in Pittsburgh, Pa.
