Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's basketball team continued its undefeated beginning to the New Year with a 68-47 victory over visiting Hood in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The win is the second-straight for the Saints in 2012 and is their highest margin of victory on the season.
Katelyn Fischer was nearly unstoppable on the perimeter for the Saints (5-9, 3-3 CAC), scoring a game-high 21 points to go with nine assists and seven rebounds. Marymount was similarly dominant in the post as forwards Tynisha Parks and Julie Tomesheski added 12 and 11 points, respectively, while both grabbing five rebounds.
Also impressive defensively, Dominique Dickens napped a career-high six steals to go with nine points. Samantha Kane added eight points and Sam Spencer chipped in six, all from downtown.
Leading from the get-go, Marymount would lead 17-4 nine minutes in. Not willing to let things get out of hand, the Blazers (3-10, 0-6 CAC) then went on an 18-5 run over the next nine minutes to knot things up at 22-22 with two minutes left in the stanza. A three-pointer by Fischer broke the tie while another trifecta by Spencer with time expiring gave the Saints a six-point, 30-24, lead going into the break.
Coming out of halftime, it was all Marymount as the Saints quickly regained their double-figure lead on a three from Fischer at the 16:26 mark to go up 38-26. Not allowing its lead to dip below 11 the rest of the way, MU held Hood to just one field goal in the final six minutes to seal the victory.
Dyanna Prater led the Blazers with 14 points while Rachel Wiley posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Briana Lee chipped in 10 points in the loss.
Marymount returns to the hardwood on Monday in their final non-conference game against the season on the road at Richard Stockton.
