Thoroughbreds open league play with 67-51 win over Vassar

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The Skidmore College women's basketball team opened its Liberty League schedule with a 67-51 victory over Vassar, Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 7-2 overall, while the Brewers fall to 6-3.  It was the first league contest for both teams.

Trailing 29-28 at the break, Skidmore opened the half on a 12-2 run and went on a 15-0 run just a few minutes later to take control of the contest. The Thoroughbreds pushed the lead to 20 with just over two minutes remaining on a three from freshman Molly McLaughlin and would go on to a 16-point victory. 

Skidmore shot 45.7% (16-35) in the second half, tallying 13 assists on 16 made shots, while holding Vassar to 23.5% (8-34) from the floor.

Christina Gargiso led the way for Skidmore with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists.  Megan Gaugler tallied a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two blocks and two steals.  Jessie Kavana finished with 13 on 3-of-5 shooting from downtown and Jordyn Wartts finished with nine points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Cyndi Matsuoka had a double-double for the Brewers, pouring in a team-high 13 points and hauling down 11 boards.  Kristyn Tempora finished with 11 points and Colleen O'Connell had six points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Thoroughbreds host RIT, tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
