SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (January 6, 2012) – The Skidmore College women's basketball team used an 11-3 run to start the second half and another 15-0 burst midway through the period, to defeat the Brewers 67-51 in the opening game of the Liberty League schedule on Friday night at the Williamson Center.
The Brewers, who led the contest 29-28 at halftime, saw Skidmore score the opening basket of the second half for a 30-29 lead and then trailed the rest of contest. Plagued by a 23 percent shooting second half and able to connect on only three 3-pointers during the game, Vassar was unable to get closer than four points in the final 20 minutes, falling behind by as many 20 points with seven minutes to play.
The loss drops Vassar to 6-3, 0-1, while Skidmore improves to 7-2, 1-0. Vassar travels to Union for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday, while Skidmore hosts Liberty League newcomer Rochester Institute of Technology at 2:00 p.m.
Following a layup by freshman forward Angela Botiba with 14:21 to play, Skidmore led the game 40-31 and maintained that margin for the next three minutes. A layup from senior guard Brittany Parks with 11:13 remaining cut the Skidmore lead to five points at 44-39, but the Thoroughbreds scored the next 15 straight points, getting six of them from two 3-pointers from senior guard Jessie Kavana, to take a commanding 59-39 lead with 6:57 to play. Skidmore kept the Brewers at bay from that point.
The first half was tied three times. The Brewers held their largest lead at 19-11 with 8:40 to play following a free throw from junior forward Natalie Allen. Skidmore tied the game at 26-26 after freshman guard Molly McLaughlin hit a 3-pointer at the 2:01 mark. Vassar took the narrow halftime lead with three free throws.
Sophomore guard Cydni Matsuoka led the Brewers with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward Kristyn Tempora had 11 points and six rebounds and freshman forward Colleen O'Connell supplemented the effort with 12 rebounds.
Skidmore was paced by Kavana and senior guard Megan Gaugler each with 13 points. Gaugler had 11 rebounds and junior forward Logan Frederick had 10 boards.
