The women's basketball team scored early and often en route to a 67-46 victory in their WIAC opener against UW-Platteville.
The Falcons game out of the gate running and never looked back. Five consecutive points by Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, WI, Altoona) highlighted the Falcons opening the game on a 13-0 run. She scored the games' first five points off a three-pointer and a made jumper within the first 25 seconds of play.
Nikki Guhr (Muskego, WI, Muskego) would contribute six of the points during the 13-0 run. Guhr would finish the game with a season's best 16 points. He career high was 17, which came against UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 23, 2011. At one point, Guhr had eights points while the entire Platteville team had nine. Guhr's 16 points led a Falcon team that never trailed throughout the entire game.
The Falcons were outstanding in every statistical category. As a team, they shot a stellar 44.4 percent from field goal range, connecting on 24-54. Led by Guhr's 16 points and T. Gregorich's 10, the Falcons used an energized force to amount leads of 18 or more, 16 different times throughout the game. Their largest lead was 23, which came with 3:29 to play.
On defense, the Falcons were highlighted by Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City)'s season-high 17 rebounds. She had more than double the rebounds than any other player did. Dohrn has now had 10 or more rebounds in five of the Falcons' six games. As a team, the Falcons nearly doubled-up on the Pioneers, pulling down 47 boards while holding Platteville to a mere 26. Dohrn would add nine points to come up just shy of a double double.
Dohrn also led the Falcons in what proved to be their best free-throw percentage thus far. Dohrn was 6-6 from behind the line. As a team, the Falcons were a phenomenal 16-18 for 88.9 percent. Platteville was only 16-27 for 63 percent.
Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) had eight rebounds for UWRF. She also had nine points for a complete performance.
Win the victory, the Falcons climb to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the WIAC. Platteville meanwhile falls to 3-5 and 0-1 in the WIAC.
The Falcons are now 39-24 all time against the Pioneers.
Up next for the Falcons is an away contest against Martin Luther College. Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6 in New Ulm, Minn. The Falcons are 5-0 all time against the Knights.
