BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team got off to a slow start for the second straight game as it fell, 87-60, to host Buffalo State Saturday afternoon. The Bengals opened the game with a 18-2 run in the first nine minutes of the game, and never trailed by less than 16 points from that point on. With the loss, the Lakers dropped to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC, while Buffalo State improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.
Lauren Nunziato (So., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) and Kari Kipper (Jr., Loundonville, N.Y.) paced the Oswego State offense with 10 points each as no other player scored more than four points. Paula Egelston (So., Fultonville, N.Y.) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds off the bench. Buffalo State's Barb Kiliszek led all scorers with 14 points followed by 13 from Staci McElroy and 11 from Bianca Smiley, who also added eight boards.
Nunziato put the Lakers on the scoreboard over five minutes into the first half with a pair of free throws to end a 12-0 Bengal run. Oswego State struggled to cut into the Buffalo State advantage, as the Lakers closed out the frame shooting 14.3 percent on 3-of-21 from the field to go into halftime trailing 41-18. Oswego State did have success from the free throw line converting 11-of-12 attempts.
The Laker shooting improved to 27.6 percent in the second half, but Oswego State was not able to get any closer than 15 points early in the stanza as the Bengals cruised to the win.
The Lakers host Cazenovia in a non-conference contest against Cazenovia on Friday, December 16 at 6 p.m. to end the 2011 portion of the schedule.
