STEVENS POINT, Wis. -- Alverno College shot just 23 percent from the field in a 56-37 loss to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the opening game of the 2011 Pointer Tip-Off Classic in Berg Gymnasium.
The victorious Titans (2-0) connected on 40 percent of their shots and never trailed in the game. The Inferno (1-1) tied the game, 8-8, with just under 13 minutes to play in the first half on a Hannah Galstad (Holmen, Wis.) layup, but an 8-0 run by the Titans kept them in the lead for good, including a 26-15 halftime advantage.
Alverno cut the lead to 10 on a number of occasions in the second period, but Oshkosh controlled the glass, a 47-28 advantage, and converted 78 percent (14-of-18) of their free throws to remain in front. The Inferno were just 10-of-17 (59%) from the charity stripe and committed 22 turnovers compared to the Titans' 17.
Alverno senior Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and sophomore and Jamie Hoernke (Mt. Horeb, Wis.) led all scorers with 10 points apiece, and Kontowski also had a game-high four assists.
Kayla Kennedy (Trempealeau, Wis./Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau) added nine points for the Inferno and Galstad chipped in seven.
The Inferno face host UW-Stevens Point in the final game of the Pointer Tip-Off Classic tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Pointers play Finlandia University in tonight's second game.
