Titans Extinguish Inferno

UW-Oshkosh held Alverno College to 23-percent shooting during a 56-37 women's basketball victory on Friday (Nov. 18) in Stevens Point.

The Titans (2-0) jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage and led by double digits for the final 22 minutes. Alverno College (1-1) knocked down 12 of its 52 field goal attempts for the game, including 1-of-11 three-point tries during the opening half.

Kelsey Myklebust (Sr. • Wisconsin Dells) started things with two buckets in the first three minutes. The Inferno kept things close with a pair of jump shots from Kayla Kennedy. With 13 minutes left in the period, Hannah Galstad sank a lay-up to tie the score at 8.

The Titans broke away with a 15-2 scoring run. The first five hoops of the sequence came from five different players, as Katie Kitzke's (Jr. • South Milwaukee) three-pointer made it 21-10. Amanda Crahan (Fr. • Bancroft) buried another triple before the break for a 26-12 margin.

A defensive battle kept the lead between 10 and 14 points until the final five minutes. UW-Oshkosh upped its cushion to 32-19 with a long-range jumper by Megan Lund (Sr. • Reedsville). Myklebust added three free throws later for a 39-25 lead at the 6:49 mark.

The Titans converted seven more free throws, stretching their margin to as much as 20 points. They finished 14-of-18 at the charity stripe (78 percent), to go along with 40 percent shooting from the field and 31 percent accuracy from deep (4-13).

UW-Oshkosh, which posted a commanding 47-28 edge in rebounds, used a balanced scoring attack. Kitzke and Myklebust each posted nine points, while Heather Conroy (Fr. • Wisconsin Dells) marked eight and Megan Wenig (Jr. • Oshkosh) seven. Conroy paced all players with eight boards and Wenig topped the squad with three assists.

Alicia Kontowski totaled 10 points and four assists for the Inferno. Nine points apiece came from Kennedy and Jamie Hoernke, as Alyssa Jensen pulled down five rebounds. Alverno College finished with 10-of-17 success (59 percent) at the foul line and 3-of-17 marksmanship behind the arc (18 percent).

The Titans match up with Finlandia University (Mich.) on Saturday (Nov. 19).
