Eagles Put Titans Away With Fast Start

Danielle Frank's dominating individual performance helped UW-La Crosse record a 56-44 win over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team on Wednesday (Feb. 9) in La Crosse.

Frank was the game leader in all five statistical categories with her 16 points, 14 rebounds, six blocks, three assists and two steals. The Eagles (18-5/11-3 WIAC) forced the Titans into 2-of-13 shooting to open the contest.

A three-point basket by Melissa Lang gave UW-La Crosse the game's only lead change 19 seconds into play. Frank followed with three lay-ups, while Kassie Robinson added a hoop, to gain a 17-4 cushion with 12:29 to play in the first half.

UW-Oshkosh (11-12/6-8 WIAC) made a brief charge with six unanswered points. Shelby Churchill's (Sr. • Sheboygan) jumper brought her team within 17-10. The Eagles closed out the period with a 12-3 scoring run, including triples from Lang and Briana Radowicz, to lead at intermission, 29-13.

The two teams alternated field goals during the first four minutes of the second half. UW-La Crosse started to pull away when Taylor Larson drained a three-ball and Frank followed with six straight points. The Eagles posted their largest advantage of the game at 51-26 with 8:16 on the clock.

Churchill owned the next portion of play, hitting two jump shots and a pair of free throws. Michelle Boeder (Sr. • Oshkosh) shrunk the deficit even more by totaling eight of her nine points in the last 4:32.

The Titans shot 19 percent during the opening period and finished at 31 percent (16-52). Churchill compiled 10 points and 10 rebounds, as Katie Kitzke (So. • South Milwaukee) marked 10 points. UW-Oshkosh finished with 3-of-9 three-point shooting, 9-of-14 free throw accuracy (64 percent) and 11 turnovers.

UW-La Crosse also struggled offensively, totaling 36 percent shooting (21-59). That included 6-of-21 conversions behind the arc (29 percent), along with 8-of-12 makes at the foul line (67 percent). The Eagles, who won the battle on the boards (46-32), also received 12 points and nine rebounds from Dana Churchill.

UW-Oshkosh can clinch a spot in the WIAC Tournament with a win against UW-Superior on Saturday (Feb. 12) in Kolf Sports Center.
