Titans Chase Down Yellowjackets

UW-Oshkosh overcame an 18-0 deficit and sealed the game at the free throw line for a 73-64 women's basketball victory at UW-Superior on Saturday (Jan. 8).

The Titans (8-6/3-2 WIAC) converted 24-of-27 foul shots (89 percent), including eight in the final 37 seconds. Leading 65-63, UW-Oshkosh got a pair of free throws from Michelle Boeder (Sr. • Oshkosh), Laura Ebbens (Sr. • Appleton), Shelby Churchill (Sr. • Sheboygan) and Becca Diedrich (Fr. • Two Rivers) to hold off the Yellowjackets (6-8/0-5 WIAC).

Boeder (seven rebounds) topped UW-Oshkosh with 18 points, while Kelsey Myklebust (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells) contributed 13 points and Churchill 12 points and eight rebounds. Ebbens tacked on 10 points and four assists for the Titans, who buried 7-of-14 attempts (50 percent) from three-point range and won the rebounding category, 40-25.

UW-Oshkosh, which scored just two points in the opening eight minutes of its previous contest, also came out slow against UW-Superior. Kelsey Thingvold was the game's early offense, marking a jumper and two lay-ups as the Yellowjackets stormed to an 18-0 lead just 5:21 into play. Boeder got the Titans on the board with a three-pointer as 14:13 remained in the first half.

Long-range jumpers by Boeder and Churchill midway through the period tightened the score. With 9:59 on the clock, Myklebust dropped in a lay-up and got fouled to cut the deficit to 24-12. Another Boeder triple and two free throws from Megan Wenig (So. • Oshkosh) made it a 30-26 tally at the 4:50 mark.

Myklebust booked a lay-up and a jumper, providing UW-Oshkosh its first advantage at 34-33. She then buried a mid-range basket two seconds before the buzzer to put the Titans up at halftime, 40-37.

The second period began with another big run, with the visitors rattling off 15 unanswered points. UW-Superior didn't score for 6:38 as the Titans stretched their cushion. Following back-to-back Churchill lay-ins, UW-Oshkosh got a Diedrich jumper and Wenig's three-point connection to gain a 55-37 lead with 13:34 remaining.

The Yellowjackets didn't surrender, coming back with the contest's next 12 points. Connie Urmanski accounted for seven of those, including a lay-up that made it 55-49. UW-Superior later pulled within two points (57-55) when Britnee Blake and Urmanski dialed up consecutive jumpers from long distance.

Hailey Hart, who drained a triple to make it 63-60 with two minutes remaining, finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Urmanski topped her squad with 19 points as Thingvold tallied 10. The Yellowjackets recorded 44 percent shooting (24-54), along with 7-of-17 deep accuracy (41 percent) and 9-of-16 makes at the charity stripe (56 percent).

UW-Oshkosh shot 41 percent (21-51) as it improved to 55-2 all-time against UW-Superior. Both teams took care of the ball, with the Yellowjackets giving it away nine times and the Titans committing 11 turnovers.

Nationally ranked UW-Whitewater will host UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (Jan. 12).
