Titans Topple Yellowjackets

After four minutes of their WIAC conference women's basketball game with UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon, the UW-Superior Yellowjackets appeared well on their way towards notching their first league victory of the 2010-2011 season.

But after taking an 18-0 lead in the first six minutes of action, the Yellowjackets watched as the Titans rallied to take a 40-37 lead into halftime and then expanded their advantage to as many as 15 in the second half on to way claiming a 73-64 victory at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

UW-Superior (6-8 overall, 0-5 WIAC) took command early, scoring the game's first 18 points behind six points each from Kelsey Thingvold (Crystal, Minn.) and Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis.) in the opening six minutes of action.

But the Titans (8-6, 3-2) would steadily climb back behind the play of Michelle Boeder, who knocked down three three-pointers in the opening half, allowing UW-Oshkosh to outscore the Yellowjackets 40-19 for the rest of the first half in taking a three-point lead into halftime.

UW-Oshkosh would then open the second half with another surge, this time outscoring the Yellowjackets 15-3 over the first six minutes to take a 55-40 lead.

The Yellowjackets would attempt to make a push as the second half wore on, getting two key three-pointers from sophomore Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Minn.) to cut the deficit to 55-53 in the final five minutes.

UW-Oshkosh would hold on down the stretch however, getting key baskets from Becca Diedrich and Shelby Churchill on the way to taking a 61-53 lead before connecting on four consecutive free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

UW-Superior was paced by Urmanski, who finished with a game-high 19 points while Hart pitched in with 16 points for the Yellowjackets.  Thingvold finished with 10 points for UW-Superior as well.

The Titans were paced by Boeder with 18 points.  Kelsey Myklebust added 13 points while Churchill had 12 points and Laura Ebbens 10 for UW-Oshkosh, who held a commanding 40-24 edge in rebounds for the game.
