ALBION, Mich. – An eight-minute scoring drought in the first half sapped the momentum Albion College gained from a fast start as it wilted in a 62-36 loss to the nationally-ranked team from Calvin College inside Kresge Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Patty Rewa converted a layup and Keigan Edwards knocked down a 3-point basket to lift Albion to an 11-6 lead seven minutes into the game. The margin remained at five as Rewa added another layup near the midpoint of the first half.
Albion didn't score again until there were 2 ½ minutes left before halftime. Autumn Haggadone's layup off a steal by Melissa Shaw pulled Albion to within six at 23-17, but that was as close as the Britons would get.
Jill Thomas and Julia Hilbrands scored baskets as Calvin extended the margin to double digits in the final minute of the first half. Calvin added on to the lead with a 12-3 run over the first 5 ½ minutes of the second half.
Rewa led Albion with eight points.
Albion continues Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association action Saturday when it makes the road trip to Adrian College.
