BEREA, OHIO – Sophomore guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) scored 12 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 72-33, today (Saturday, January 22, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center to remain in first place in the OAC. This was the second of five straight home games for the Yellow Jackets.
With its win, B-W is now 13-3 overall and 8-1 in the OAC and one game ahead of second place Ohio Northern University and the University of Mount Union. B-W, which has won three straight and eight of its last nine, plays a rescheduled game versus Mt. Union in Berea on Monday at 7:30 p.m. In addition to Carpenter for B-W, senior 2-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) had eight points and five rebounds in limited action due to the blowout. For Marietta, now 7-10 overall and 3-7 in the OAC, freshman guard Tori Dixon and sophomore All-OAC forward Aleisha Guiler led the way with nine points apiece.
With her eight points today, Schroeder remained in fourth place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,245 career points and is 64 shy of catching former Academic All-American and B-W Hall of Famer Jen Swinehart (1995-99) who had 1,309 points.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead on a layup at the 19:44 mark by Schroeder. Following a 2-2 tie, B-W went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 lead at the 16:11 mark when junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary's Central Catholic) made a jump shot.
In the second half, B-W opened with a 8-0 run, including six straight points from Carpenter to open a 38-19 lead with 18:16 left in the game. After Marietta cut the lead to 40-25, B-W went on a 6-0 run to increase its advantage to 20 points at 46-26 when senior guard Ali Stack (Vermilion/ Firelands) made two foul shots at 13:02 and sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) canned a three-pointer to make it 49-26 at 11:34 to pretty much end matters. The largest lead for the Yellow Jackets was 39 points at 72-33 with the final score.
Following its Monday game versus Mt. Union, the Yellow Jackets remain at home and are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 26 when they host Heidelberg University in the Ursprung Gym at 7:30 p.m. In addition, fans can listen to all of the action on either campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, or via the WBWC Internet web site at www.wbwc.com.
Two Yellow Jacket women's and men's basketball doubleheaders will be telecast on SportsTime Ohio this winter.
