Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's basketball team closed out the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference season with a 47-42 victory over visiting Wesley on Wednesday.  The Saints have won their last five games and eight of the last nine.

Senior forwards Maame Amponsah and Beth Wiggins led MU (9-5, 7-1 CAC) with a pair of double-doubles on the night.  Wiggins led all players with 17 points and 16 rebounds while Amponsah added 13 points to go with 12 boards.

Marymount won the game at the free throw line. Coming into the game shooting just 59.4 percent from the charity stripe for the season, the Saints hit all 11 of their free throws including five down the stretch to seal the win.

A Sam Spencer three-pointer with three minutes to play broke open a back-and-forth second half and gave the Saints a 42-40 lead. Holding the Wolverines (7-10, 2-6 CAC) scoreless the next two trips down the court, Amanda Billy converted three free throws with 96 ticks remaining to give MU a five point lead they would hold on to the rest of the way.

Marymount held Wesley scoreless through the first four minutes of play and led by as many as six in the first half at 13-7.  The Wolverines then went on a 10-2 run over six minutes to take their first lead of the game.  Rachelle Allen would hit the final four points of the half to salvage a 21-21 draw for WC going into the break.

Jazmine Miller led the Wolverines with 11 points while Angie Owens pulled down eight rebounds.

Marymount returns to action on Saturday to kick off the second round of CAC play at York (Pa.).  The Spartans were the only team to defeat the Saints in league play this season.
