Eagles Edge Yellowjackets

More news about: UW-Superior

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team turned in a gutsy performance on Wednesday, falling behind early and clawing their way back, eventually taking a lead in the second half.  Unfortunately, they weren't able to hold on, and like the men's team earlier in the evening, dropped a close one to UW-La Crosse, 61-59.

La Crosse's Danielle Frank hit a layup with 1:02 to play to provide the winning shot.  The Yellowjackets had the last attempt of the game, but the shot by Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn.) didn't fall.

The Eagles scored the first six points of the game before Kelsey Thingvold (Crystal, Minn.) made a layup to get the Yellowjackets on the board with 14:47 to play in the first half.  La Crosse would continue to apply pressure, building their lead to as many as 13 points, before settling for a seven-point margin, 37-30, at the break.  Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis.) had a monster first half for the Yellowjackets scoring 13 points on 5-8 shooting and also pulling down a team-high six rebounds.

In the second half, the Yellowjackets opened up by going on a 10-4 run and pulling to within one, with Hart and Thingvold accounting for seven of the points.  Then with 14:35 to play, Thingvold made a layup giving the Yellowjackets a one-point lead at 44-43.  The Eagles regained the lead with 5:40 to play on a Kassie Robinson three-pointer and held on the rest of the way to get the victory.

Hart finished the game with team-highs in points (19) and rebounds (9).  Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn.) had a team-leading four assists.  Connie Urmanksi (Edgar, Wis.) scored 15 points, as the only other Yellowjacket to score in double figures.

The Yellowjackets shot 41.8% from the field, and were 6-12 from three-point range.  La Crosse shot 37.9% from the field for the game were 6-26 (23.1%) from three-point range.

Lindsey Litrenta led the Eagles with 19 points, Danielle Frank had 13 points.
