Warhawk Win Streak to Six with Victory over Edgewood

UW-Whitewater, ranked fifteenth in the D3hoops.com national poll, defeated Edgewood College 91-63  for its sixth consecutive win Wednesday night in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  The victory moves head coach Keri Carollo, in her ninth year, into second place in the UW-W books ahead of Julia Yeater (149 wins, 1990-2001).

Whitewater broke in front 6-0, but the Eagles had pulled within two, 19-17 on a three by freshman guard Denay Hering at 13:41.  With the score 25-22, Whitewater rolled off an 11-0 run leading in to a 21-5 streak that saw the margin balloon to 46-27 at 3:36 left in the half.  The Warhawks went into intermission with a 50-34 advantage.

The halftime score was inconsistent with the play of sophomore forward Alison Tobin and sophomore guard Danielle Dixon for Edgewood.  Between them, Tobin and Dixon scored 26 points, made 10-11 field goals, went 3-3 from beyond the arc, and made all three of their free throw attempts.  Whitewater countered with balance, led by senior center Dana Thompson's 11 points and five steals from freshman guard Kaitlyn Thill.

Whitewater stole the ball the first three times Edgewood had possession in the second half, Dixon missed her first shot, and Tobin didn't get a shot off in five minutes before subbing out as UW-W bled away any Edgewood halftime strategy with a 20-4 start of the second half.  The Warhawks led 70-38 with less than five minutes gone, 15:07 showing on the clock.

The rest was a game of numbers.  The 91 points tied Whitewater's season high, also accomplished in a win over Dubuque December 14.  The 23 point winning margin also tied the largest winning margin of the year, equaling the score against Dubuque.  Seventeen players saw action for UW-W, eleven scored.  UW-W tied their season high with six blocked shots.  Thompson led the team in scoring for the fifth straight game, scoring 20 while hitting 10-12 free throws.  Junior guard Jamie Swanson added 11 points in 13 minutes, and junior forward Megan Theune added 11.  Thill finished with a team season high seven assists, game high eight steals and was the third Warhawk with 11 points.

Dixon and Tobin finished with 21 and 19, respectively, for Edgewood.  Although they cooled from their torrid first half, both shot well, with Dixon hitting 8-12 shots from the floor and Tobin 6-10, and they combined for a 7-7 night from the line.  No one else for the Eagles had more than six points.

UW-W, 11-2 overall, has won ten of its last eleven.  The Warhawks will host UW-River Falls at 6:00 Saturday.

Edgewood, 6-5 overall, is just 1-5 away from the Edgedome in Madison.
