GREENSBURG, PA- Junior Kayla Watson (Belle Vernon,
PA/Belle Vernon) scored a career high 15 points in her first appearance of the season but Pitt-Greensburg couldn't come back from a 15 point half time deficit as #25 Medaille College knocked off the Bobcats 59-46. UPG falls to 0-2 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and face Point Park University on Monday, December 9 at 8:00 PM.
"We got down by 15 at the half but we came out and never quit." said head coach Erin Eaton. "We recognized a lot of different defenses and executed against them. I am very proud of our kids for hanging in the game."
Pitt-Greensburg fell behind 8-1 early in the contest but Watson scored UPG's next five straight points to cut the lead to 10-6. Watson finished the game with a career high 15 points sinking 7-8 free throws in her first action of the season due to injury.
"Kayla brings guts, something we've been waiting for all year. She has spent the last 7 weeks in a boot that she just got out of and her toughness is going to help us win a ton of games down the stretch."
The Lady Bobcats struggled to shoot from the outside in the first period making just 21.9% of their attempts including 0-14 from behind the arc. During that cold stretch Medaille surged ahead on a 16-2 run, taking a 31-16 lead into the break.
Pitt-Greensburg trailed by as many as 17 but never quit and cut the Medaille lead to just eight points with 8:08 remaining in regulation. The Mavericks wouldn't allow UPG to get any closer and held off the late charge taking the contest 59-46.
"At any given point all five players on the floor were playing their hardest."
Ali Bilak (Wall, PA/East Allegheny) added eight points from the point guard position and Casey Stanton (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) grabbed nine rebounds to go along with seven points.
Bianca Smiley paced a very balanced maverick attack with 15 points on 5-11 shooting. Six members of the Medaille squad scored at least six points.
