READING, Pa. -- Salisbury University used a strong shooting performance to earn a 78-63 victory over the Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball team Friday afternoon in the Doubletree Holiday Tournament Championship Game. The two-day event was hosted by Albright College.
The loss drops W&J to 9-3 overall. Salisbury improves to 7-6 overall with the victory.
Salisbury boasted a balanced and efficient offensive output. Four Sea Gulls scored in double figures as Salisbury connected on 57.9 percent (33-of-57) of its field goal attempts. The Sea Gulls made eight three-point field goals and led by as many as 21 points in the victory. Jordan Oates posted 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way for SU. Greg Bloodsworth, who earned Tournament MVP honors, finished with 14 points and five assists Friday.
Kyran Mitchell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) recorded a double-double effort in the loss. The senior finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals in the setback. Junior guard Nick Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) tallied 12 points and added eight rebounds.
W&J shot 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the field during the game. They made 13 field goals in each half as Salisbury was able to hold down a W&J offense that averages 84.0 points per game this season. The Presidents made just three-of-18 attempts from three-point range.
The Presidents defense forced Salisbury to commit 23 turnovers. However, the Red and Black were held just a 17-11 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Mitchell and freshman Brandon Jakiela (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) both earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
The Presidents host Geneva College for a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Salvitti Family Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 5. The game will be the first of three straight home contests for the Red and Black.
