Brooklyn Upsets Baruch on Senior Night; Records Seventh 20-Win Season in School History

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team improved to a perfect 11-0 at home this season, as the Bulldogs upset City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) leader Baruch College, 75-68, on Tuesday night at the West Quad Center in their regular season finale. Seniors Jai Kellman, Valon Djombalic and Steven Diaz were honored prior to the start of the game as part of Senior Night festivities.

With the win, Brooklyn concludes the 2014-2015 regular season with a 20-5 overall record and a 12-4 record in the CUNYAC. The win also secures the #2 seed for BC in the upcoming conference championships, as the Bulldogs and Bearcats have split the regular season series with each team winning on their home court. Baruch defeated Brooklyn 85-74 back on January 10th.

The 20 wins on the year marks the seventh 20-win season in program history, as the 2014-2015 Bulldogs join the 1949-50 (24-5), 1972-73 (21-9), 1981-82 (22-9), 2007-08 (21-7), 2008-09 (23-6) and 2009-10 (22-7) BC teams.

Baruch concludes the regular season with an 18-6 overall record and a 14-2 record in conference play. The Bearcats enter the CUNYAC Championships as the #1 seed.

The Bulldogs never trailed in the first 20 minutes of play, as Brooklyn led from the opening tip until the halftime buzzer.

BC opened the game on a 7-0 run powered by Djombalic and junior Egzon Gjonbalaj. The Bearcats' Granville Gittens got the visitors on the board at the 17:17 mark with a layup.

Baruch would chip away at its deficit and eventually get to within one, 18-17, on a three-pointer from Ryan Markoe with 10:23 left in the first half. However, the Bulldogs would answer with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to go up by 11, 30-19. The Bearcats would again chip away at its deficit over the final 6:32 of the half and again get to within one on two occasions, as Brooklyn would take a 34-33 halftime lead.

The second half saw the Bulldogs take a seven-point lead, 42-35, through the first three minutes of the period. Baruch would continue to hang around; however, and eventually take its first lead of the game by using a 15-3 run to go ahead by five, 50-45, its largest lead of the game, with 11:45 remaining in the game.

Following a timeout from head coach Rich Micallef, the Bulldogs would regroup and retake the lead for good using an 8-2 run over the next two minutes. Kellman powered the run for Brooklyn, scoring seven of the eight points. His pair of made free throws at the 9:22 mark put the Bulldogs up 53-52.

With Brooklyn still holding onto a one-point lead, 58-57, with 6:54 remaining, the Bulldogs would extend its lead to seven, 64-57, with 4:33 left on the clock. The home team would extend its lead back to double figures before closing out the Bearcats, 75-68.

Gjonbalaj led all scorers with 26 points, to go along with eight rebounds. Kellman added 14 points, while Jamel Gist finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Djombalic was the fourth Bulldog in double figures with 10 points, to go with seven rebounds. Lorenzo Williams pulled down 10 rebounds, to go with seven points.

Chimaechi Ekekeugbor led Baruch with 22 points coming off the bench, while Raymond De La Cruz chipped in with 14 points. Gittens finished the night with 12 points.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 51% (26-for-51) from the field, including 43.8% (7-for-16) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also shot 59.3% (16-for-27) from the line. The home team also dominated the glass, out-rebounding the visitors, 46-24.

Baruch shot 41.5% (27-for-65) from the field, including 35% (7-for-20) from three. The Bearcats shot 58.3% (7-for-12) from the charity stripe.

As the #2 seed, Brooklyn will open the CUNYAC Championships against #7 seeded John Jay College of Criminal Justice in the quarterfinals round on Sunday, February 22nd. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the West Quad Center. The Bulldogs swept the regular season meetings against the Bloodhounds, as Brooklyn defeated John Jay, 84-74, on the road back on December 6th and squeaked out an 84-76 overtime win on January 23rd at West Quad.
