UW-Whitewater too much for Yellowjackets

More news about: UW-Superior

It was "Alumni Day" at UW-Superior Saturday afternoon. "Alumni Day" is always a great weekend to get some of the past Yellowjacket basketball players together to play an alumni game and stick around to watch the current Yellowjackets in a Saturday matinee. Unfortunately, the retired Yellowjackets weren't able to help out the current Yellowjackets against UW-Whitewater. The Warhawks blitzed the Yellowiackets into submission in the first half, and won the game going away, 83-59.

Whitewater started the game on a 6-0 run. Two free throws by Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) got the Yellowjackets on the board. Unfortunately that was about the extent of the positivity for the Yellowjackets for the next several minutes. Superior started the game 0-of-7 from the field, and found itself in a hole early. It didn't hit a field goal until Nate Kailen hit a jumper with 14:15 left in the first half. Kalien's shot made it 14-5 in favor of Whitewater.

From there, it was all Warhawks. They got to the basket at will, forcing Superior into turnovers on one end and turning them into layups and dunks on the other end.

A nice surprise for the Yellowjackets came in the form of John Denny (Luck, Wis./Luck), who finished the first half with seven points, but Superior trailed 44-16 at the break. Superior made just 6-of-33 shots from the field in the first half. On the other hand, Whitewater was 16-of-24.

The second half was more of the same for both teams. Superior started to knock down some shots from outside and that opened up some driving lanes to the basket. Unfortunately, the deficit was much too large for the Yellowjackets to overcome.

Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) didn't score in the first half, but ended up with 14 points in the second half to lead all scorers. Schradle also finished with 10 rebounds. Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) made some nice drives to the basket, on his way to 13 points. Denny finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

The Warhawks had three players score 12 points apiece to lead them. Whitewater also shot a grand total of 38 free throws thanks to 29 Superior fouls.

With the loss, Superior drops to 2-7 in the WIAC. It will travel to UW-River Falls on Wednesday. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
