No. 2 Warhawks Claim 10th Straight Victory

The No. 2 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team used a strong start on the road Saturday to defeat UW-Superior 83-59 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in Superior, Wis.

 

The Warhawks (16-2 overall, 9-0 WIAC) shot 54 percent from the field, including a 66.7 percent clip in the first half, and held the Yellowjackets to 32.8 percent, including 18.2 percent in the first half, en route to their 10th straight win and 21st in their last 24 tries against UW-Superior.

 

Six players scored between eight and 12 points to lead UW-Whitewater, which remains alone in first place in the conference. Senior guard Rahjan Muhammad, junior wing Xzavier Moananu and junior forward Ron Patten tallied 12 points apiece to pace the balanced Warhawks. Muhammad, making his UW-Whitewater debut, also grabbed six rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.

 

Senior guard Quardell Young totaled 11 points and four assists, while senior guard Cody Odegaard corralled a team-best seven rebounds.

 

Freshman guard Jerry Ngobi added nine points in 12 minutes.

 

The Warhawks sprinted out to a 14-3 lead just over five and a half minutes into the contest and extended their advantage all the way to 28 points by the end of the first period.

 

UW-Whitewater hit 16-of-24 from the floor in the half and forced the Yellowjackets (8-10, 2-7) into 6-of-33 shooting on the other end.

 

The Warhawks extended their lead early in the second and didn't allow UW-Superior to get closer than 20 points in the half. UW-Whitewater hit 16-of-24 from the free throw line to help maintain its lead.

 

The Warhawks held a 42-22 advantage on points in the paint, and their bench outscored the Yellowjackets' reserves 40-26.

 

UW-Whitewater wraps up a stretch of four road games in a 14-day span Wednesday at UW-Platteville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
