BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's basketball team earned its second win in as many nights, by defeating Maine Maritime, 80-54, in the APEX Main Gym, on Tuesday evening. The game was a part of the 8th annual CUNY Athletic Conference Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Classic, hosted by Lehman College.
Junior forward Jerrome Jones (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Vernon) had a game-high 18 points. Senior guard Jonathan Greenfield (Hartford, Conn./Windsor) added 13 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while forcing four steals. Junior guard Olando Minott(Bronx, N.Y./Samuel Gompers) chipped in with nine points.
The Mariners (1-9) had a four-point lead early in the game, but the Lightning (7-5) scored the next five points, capped off by a three-point field goal from Greenfield to put Lehman up, 9-8, 4:15 into the game. After Maine Maritime regained a one-point advantage, freshman guard John Brens (Washington Heights, N.Y./All Hallows) nailed a shot from beyond the arc to give Lehman the lead for good, 12-10, with 14:43 left to play in the first half.
On the Lightning's next possession, Minott tallied a three-point shot of his own to extend Lehman's lead to five. Later in the first half, freshman guard Andrew Utate (Washington Heights, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) laid the ball up and in, while being fouled, to extend the Lightning's lead to 21-9, with 10:35 remaining. He hit the free throw to complete the three-point play and capped off Lehman's 13-0 run. Both teams went into halftime with Lehman up, 40-24.
The Lightning came storming out of the gate in the second half, going on a 24-2 run in a span of just under ten minutes. The Mariners never made the came close and Lehman would go on to win, 80-54.
Lehman will return to the APEX Main Gym on Saturday, for a CUNY Athletic Conference game with CCNY, at 2:00 p.m.
