Wixted Nets 29 as Devils Top #18 Cabrini

(Radnor, Pa.) – The #7-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team turned in a great performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating #18-ranked Cabrini College, 95-81. The Red Devils improve to 4-1 on the season, playing in the final game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

 

Brandon Angradi hit back-to-back three-pointers to open the game. He later added another, following a triple by senior guard Pete Yingst to stretch the Red Devil lead to 19-4, at the 13:34 mark.

 

Seconds later, Yingst fed Angradi for his fourth three-pointer of the half. Cabrini used free throws to cut the deficit to 22-9, before Gerry Wixted buried a three-pointer, with 12:29 remaining in the half.

 

Chris Cox went 4-for-4 from the line to give Dickinson a 37-20 advantage at the 7:33 mark.

 

Vinny Walls got hot, hitting a pair of three's to cut the lead to 37-28. Wixted later closed out the half with the Devils' seventh three-pointer, and scored again to put Dickinson in front, 45-36, at the break.

 

Wixted finished the first half with 15 points, five rebounds, a pair of assists and two blocked shots. Angradi added a free throw to his four three-pointers for 13 points while Steve Collins went 3-for-5 from the field and controlled four rebounds.

 

First-year Justus Melton and Wingst each grabbed four rebounds as the Devils held a 25-20 edge on the glass.

 

Angradi opened the second half with a three-pointer and Wixted combined with junior Ted Hinnenkamp to give the Devils another strong start, and Melton put Dickinson in front, 64-49, at the 15:40 mark.

 

Angradi and Wixted hit from long range to give the Devils a 70-51 lead, with 12:29 remaining. Cabrini went on a 10-0 run before Cox scored on back-to-back trips, including a three-point play to make the score, 75-61, with 9:28 to play.

 

Wixted and Collins matched field-goals with the Cavaliers, holding 79-67 lead, with just under seven minutes to play in the game.

 

Cabrini hit a free throw and Walls scored to make the score, 79-70. Cox found a lane for a one-hand jam for an 81-70 lead. Hinnenkamp answered a pair of free throws with a lay-up to make it, 83-72.

 

The Devils closed out the game with a solid performance at the line, hitting six straight free throws over the final minute.

 

Wixted led the way with a double-double, scoring 29 points and controlling 11 rebounds. He added five assists, blocked three shots and went 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.

 

Angradi finished with six three-pointers, scoring 23 points, hitting 5-of-6 free throws. Cox went 5-for-5 from the line, scoring 13 points to go with six rebounds and three assists.

 

Collins reaches double-figures with 10 points, grabbing six rebounds and handing out two assists. Hinnenkamp chipped in with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. Melton tallied six points and seven rebounds.

 

Aaron Walton-Moss led #17 Cabrini with 30 points and 12 rebounds, adding five assists, four blocks and four steals. The Cavaliers slip to 3-3 on the season.

 

The Red Devils were a perfect, 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the second half, finishing 15-of-17 for the game. They return to Centennial Conference action on Tuesday, hosting McDaniel College in the second game of a double-header at 8:00 pm.
