ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Senior Andrew Hoy and sophomore Pete Drescher produced career-high scoring efforts to lead the Hobart College basketball team to a 71-61 win over the University of Rochester at the Louis Alexander Palestra tonight. Hoy led all scorers with 19 points while Drescher contributed 14.
Hoy made three of the Statesmen's eight 3-pointers on the night and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Drescher was 4-for-6 shooting with a pair of 3s and made 4-of-5 at the line. Senior Connor Rehbaum chipped in 11 points and a team-high three assists.
Rochester got a team-high 17 points from Jared Seltzer. Dylan Peretz added a double-double on 16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Sam Borst-Smith contributed 12 points.
The Yellowjackets (4-5) had the upper hand early in the game, building a 17-12 lead by the 13:50 mark of the first half. Back-to-back buckets by Drescher kicked off a 10-0 Hobart run that put the visitors in front by five with 8:00 left in the half. Rochester got back within one with five minutes to go before the break, but the Statesmen ended the half on a 12-6 run to carry a 36-29 lead into halftime.
Hobart (4-2) upped its lead to nine in the first two minutes of the second half, but Rochester stayed close and use seven straight points to take a 52-51 lead on a pair of Seltzer free throws at the 7:38 mark. Rehbaum buried a 3 at the other end of the floor to put the Statesmen back in front 54-52.
After Rochester tied the game at 54, Hoy sank a 3 out of the left corner to put the Statesmen ahead for good, 57-54. After Seltzer made a layup for Rochester, junior Jake Rayburn made one free throw. Hoy stole the ball and drove for a layup with 4:04 left, and Rayburn tipped in his own miss on the fast break to give Hobart a 62-56 lead with 3:31 remaining.
Two free throws by Borst-Smith brought Rochester within four, 64-60, with 90 seconds to play. Trey Blanding made a layup for Hobart and the visitors sank five of six from the line in the final minute to close out just their sixth win in the Palestra, which opened for the 1930-31 season, in 51 tries.
The Yellowjackets outshot the Statesmen 41 percent to 39 percent, but Hobart shot 38 percent (8-21) from beyond the arc compared to a 15 percent (3-20) effort by Rochester. The Statesmen also had the advantage at the line, making 76 percent of their freebies (19-25) compared to 67 percent (16-24) for the Yellowjackets. UR had a slight edge on the glass, outrebounding Hobart 37-34, but the Statesmen forced 17 Yellowjacket turnovers while committing only 10.
Hobart will be back in action on Dec. 29, when the Statesmen face UW-Eau Claire in the first round of the Tampa (Fla.) Shootout.
