Marymount Men’s Hoops Upset Bid Falls Short at #9 Wesley

Dover, Del. – Marymount University's men's basketball team couldn't repeat an earlier season upset as it fell 78-70 to ninth-ranked Wesley in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.  The Saints and Wolverines split their season series as Marymount drops to 12-6 overall and 5-5 in league play. 

Reed Scott led the Saints with 16 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.  JC Hoellich added 14 points while Jesse Konadu and Antonio Rouse chipped in 12 and 11, respectively.

Marymount jumped out to an early lead before a Wesley (16-1, 8-1 CAC) three-pointer put the home team up 12-10 at the 15:46 mark.  Both squads traded leads nine more times over the course of the next 10 minutes before a 13-1 run gave the Wolverines a 35-25 lead with four minutes to play in the half.  Marymount would pound away at the deficit, cutting it at the free throw line to just four at 39-35 going into the break. 

In the second half, the Blue and White kept pace with Wesley and retook the lead at 46-45 on a Rouse three-pointer at the 16:14 mark.  Trading leads yet again, the Wolverines used an 8-0 to retake a double-figure lead at 62-52 with just under nine minutes to play.

Undaunted, MU responded with a 12-2 run of its own to tie things up once again at 64-64 with six minutes remaining.  Marymount kept battling and eventually took another lead up 70-69 courtesy of a Tim Brisco three-pointer with 2:36 left of the clock.  Wesley would retake the lead for good two possessions later and hold the Saints scoreless down the stretch to hold off the upset by Marymount 

David Langan led Wesley with 19 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double as well.

Marymount returns to action on Saturday as it travels to face rival Mary Washington in CAC play.
