NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Fifteen second-half turnovers proved to be the difference in the game for the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team in a 78-69 loss to No. 23 The College at Brockport at the Hawk Center, as the Golden Eagles erased a 43-36 halftime deficit en route to winning, 78-69, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game.
Brockport had a six-minute stretch in the second half where its suffocating full-court press got the best of the Hawks, and the Golden Eagles went on a 15-0 spurt to claim a 55-50 advantage. During that span, New Paltz committed seven turnovers that turned into nine Brockport points. In the second half alone, the Golden Eagles scored 21 points off turnovers.
New Paltz drops to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks have a week off from competition before taking on SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. Brockport advances to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in SUNYAC play. The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 28, hosting SUNY Cortland at 8 p.m.
Brockport hopped out to an 11-4 lead, and after a 30-second timeout by New Paltz, the Hawks constructed an 8-0 surge on the strength of five points from sophomore guard Zach Cone-Douglas (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) and three points from graduate student guard Nick Taldi (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK). After the two teams traded baskets, New Paltz went on a 7-0 run, and a Taldi three-pointer game the Hawks a 38-32 edge. Senior guard John Ivy made a free throw for Brockport to break up the run, but a three-pointer by sophomore guard Keegan Donovan (Groton, N.Y./Groton) and a layup by junior guard/forward Taylor Sowah (Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) put New Paltz ahead by 10 at 43-33. The Golden Eagles scored three points before halftime, and the two squads entered the locker room with the score at 43-36 in favor of New Paltz.
The Hawks built their lead back up to 10 at 17:29 of the second half when Taldi knocked down a pair of free throws, but Brockport stormed ahead with its 15-0 spurt, and after sophomore forward Kevin Roach (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) broke it up with a layup at 11:27 of the second half, Brockport received a basket by freshman guard/forward Clifton Lyerly and a trey from Ivy to go up by 10 (62-52).
New Paltz went down fighting, whittling the deficit down to four twice, the second of which came on a made jumper by Cone-Douglas with 3:07 to go in regulation. Brockport was sent to the line repeatedly down the stretch, though, and iced the game thanks to 8-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe.
