John Ivy Leads Brockport Past New Paltz

Senior John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) moved into fifth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,517 points as The College at Brockport defeated New Paltz 78-69 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Brockport (14-1, 8-0 SUNYAC) opened up the game with an 11-4 run. Ivy started things off with a layup and proceeded to knock down nine of the Golden Eagles 11 points.

With a free throw at 13:03, New Paltz (6-11, 3-7 SUNYAC) tied things up at 13.

The game remained close for most of the second part of the half. New Paltz pushed out to a five point lead at 7:38, but Brockport quickly came back. A little over a minute later, Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) drained a three pointer to bring the game back to a tie at 27.

Towards the end of the first half, the Hawks went on a 9-1 run to take a 10 point lead one minute before halftime.

A free throw by Olusola Adeniran (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) and layup from Aaron White (North Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) cut the New Paltz lead to 42-36 as the first half finished.

New Paltz continued to play strong and hang onto the lead in the opening minutes of the second half.

Trailing by eight points at 15:04, the Golden Eagles started a comeback that would help them eventually seal the win.

Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) got things started with a jumper in the paint. During the 15-0 run by Brockport, Lyerly and Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) each hit two shots. Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) knocked down a long range three and Caruthers and Ivy each had a layup.

A three pointer from Ivy at 9:41 put the Golden Eagles up by 10 points, their largest lead of the game up to that point.

The Hawks pressured Brockport as time ran down, but the closest they would get was four points with just over three minutes left in the game.

In the final minute of play, the Golden Eagles hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line, helping them finish with the win.

As a team, Brockport shot 48.4% (30-62) from the floor, 22.2% (4-18) from long range and 60.9% (14-23) from the free throw line.

Ivy led the Golden Eagles on offense with 27 points, three steals and two blocks. Caruthers added 13 points and a team-high four steals. Lyerly was 5-for-10 and finished with 11 points. Patrick Coyle (North Chili, NY/Bishop Kearny) finished the game with a team-high seven blocks and eight rebounds.

With his 27 points, Ivy also now has a total of 1012 career points in SUNYAC regular-season games. He is just the fifth player from any SUNYAC team to reach 1,000 career conference points.
