Richard Stockton drops game to Brooklyn

Richard Stockton (13-3, 7-2 NJAC) struggled offensively throughout the game and dropped a 63-55 decision to visiting Brooklyn College (5-11) on Monday afternoon. The Ospreys shot a season-low 30.4% for the game and their 55 points was also their lowest total this year. Stockton was able to hit just 5-31 (16.1%) from behind the arc for the game and lost at home for the first time this season after six straight wins.

With the game tied at 12-12 midway through the first half, the Bulldogs ran off nine straight points for a 21-12 lead before Rameel Johnson(Newark/Science Park) broke the run with a basket. Stockton had gone scoreless for almost 6½ minutes before the hoop. Brooklyn then maintained the lead, taking a 31-24 advantage into the break. Just three Ospreys scored in the period as Nnamdi Usuwa (Avenel/Colonia) and Josh Blamon (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) netted 10 points apiece followed by Johnson with four.

Stockton rebounded nicely during a second half spurt that saw the Ospreys tie the contest at 37 on a Usuwa layup with 12:14 remaining. The Ospreys knotted the game again at 49-49 on a three ball by Kevin Johnson (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) with 5:39 to play. Stockton could not overtake Brooklyn and the Bulldogs later hit eight consecutive foul shots in the final 1:20 to ice the game. 

Stockton was led by Usuwa with 14 points while teammates Rameel Johnson and Blamon added 12 markers each. The Ospreys held a 49-36 advantage on the boards with Rameel Johnson grabbing a career-high 18 caroms to lead all players and complete his third double-double of the season. Johnson also pilfered three steals to top everyone while Rich Suhr (Toms River/TR East) dished a game-high five assists.

Jai Kellman scored a game-high 18 points for Brooklyn with Egzon Gjonbalaj adding 16 markers. Valon Djombalic grabbed 10 rebounds to go with two blocks.

Stockton will return to NJAC play on Wednesday night as Kean University comes to Galloway. Game time is 8 pm.
