New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball dropped a high scoring affair on Friday night at Nat Holman Gymnasium, as the Bulldogs suffered a 92-85 setback against the Beavers of the City College of New York (CCNY) in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action.
With the loss, BC falls to 4-11 overall on the season and 2-6 in the CUNYAC, while CCNY improves to 4-8 overall on the year and 3-4 in conference play.
Free throws played a key role to the Beavers win, as CCNY went the line 52 times, converting 39 attempts (75.0%).
Junior Jai Kellman scored a team-high 26 points coming off the bench, going 10-for-21 from the field and 6-for-9 from the line. Kellman also added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals to his stat line. Classmate Valon Djombalic registered a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Jamel Gist chipped in with 16 points and four assists.
CCNY's Anthony Lewis recorded a double-double with 35 points and 17 rebounds, both game-highs, to go along with five steals. Lewis went 12-for-28 from the field, including 2-for-6 from three and 9-for-17 from the free throw line. Cadet Manfred finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, doing most of his damage from the line, where he converted 11-of-12. Nathan Lopez also took full advantage of his free throw attempts, going 8-for-9, eventually finishing with 16 points, while Jordan Ortega chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Beavers opened the game scoring the first five points of the contest. Brooklyn would answer with a 6-1 run with Djombalic scoring all six points to get the Bulldogs to within one, 7-6, at the 17:31 mark of the first half. BC would eventually take its first lead of the game on a layup from Kellman at the 13:36 mark to give the Bulldogs a 12-11 advantage. The lead would not last long; however, as CCNY would answer with a three from Cadet that put the home team back up, 14-12.
The home team would never trail again, as the Beavers would push its advantage to double figures, eventually leading by as many as 15, 38-23, on a three from Lewis with 6:32 left before the break. CCNY would go on to take an 11-point halftime advantage, 47-36, into the locker room.
CCNY would score the first six points in the second period to balloon its lead to 17, 53-36, with 17:32 left in the game. BC would score its first points of the second stanza on a three from sophomore Steven Diaz at the 17:00 mark.
Trailing by as many as 18, 62-44, following a layup from Cadet with 14:56 remaining on the clock, the Bulldogs would begin its comeback attempt surging out on a 16-2 run to cut its deficit to four, 64-60, with 10:13 left in the game. Djombalic (5), Gist (5) and Kellman (6) fueled the run for the visitors.
CCNY would again build its lead to double figures using an 11-4 run to take a 75-64 lead with just 4:45 remaining in the game. Trailing by 13 79-66, following free throws from Ortega, with 3:19 left, the Brooklyn once again battled back to get to within three, 84-81, with just 49 ticks remaining on the clock. The visitors used a late 15-5 run to get back in the game in the final minute.
However, that's as close as the Bulldogs would get as the Beavers would hit key free throws down the stretch to close out the game and take home the win 92-85.
Brooklyn will return to action this Monday, January 20th as the Bulldogs will travel to Galloway, NJ to take on the Ospreys of Stockton College. Tip off for the game is slated for 2:00 pm. Live stats and video will be available for the game.
