The Bearcats, now 6-3, 3-1 in the CUNYAC, came in the contest undefeated in conference play. But the Cardinals controlled the majority of the game and gradually extended their lead throughout.
The two teams went back and forth in the early part of the game until the 3:57 mark of the first half. The Cardinals led by just one point but closed the half on a 10-4 run to take a seven-point advantage (35-28) going into the locker room.
The Cardinals quickly extended their lead to 12 points to start the second half when Michael Woods drained a three-pointer on the opening possession of the second half and then hit a jumper the next time down court.
From there, York maintained a fairly comfortable lead the rest of the way. Baruch briefly closed to within five points following a three-pointer by Raymond De La Cruz, which made it 46-41 with just under 11 minutes to play. But the Cardinals quickly squashed the threat with a 9-0 run and never looked back.
Free throws, which have been an issue at times for the Cardinals, was a strength tonight, as York shot 85.3 percent (29-34) from the free throw line. Baruch, meanwhile, shot just 63 percent and made only 19 trips to the charity stripe. The Cardinals also held a narrow edge in rebounding (37-33) and turnovers (17-14).
Woods had a game-high 24 points for York and was 8-of-10 from the free throw line, while Omar St. John chipped in 19 points. Jaron Williams had a double-double, with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while also blocking two shots. Donald Rodriguez recorded nine points and seven boards and Du'Quan Lawson dished out seven assists.
Baruch was led by Granville Gittens who had 17 points and eight boards. De La Cruz added 11 points.
York (5-5, 3-1 CUNYAC) will now be idle for finals week and Christmas break. They will return to action after the New Year on January 7, when they host CCNY at 8 p.m.
