New Paltz Men's Basketball Drops 85-58 Verdict to Delaware Valley

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite trailing by only six points at the half, the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team was unable to overcome a hot-shooting Delaware Valley College squad, falling, 85-58, to the non-conference Aggies on Saturday afternoon at the Hawk Center.

The Aggies, who are the defending conference champions out of the Freedom Conference, shot 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the floor for the game, including a 47.8 percent (11-of-23) mark from long range. New Paltz, meanwhile, was hurt by 57.1 percent (12-of-21) shooting from the free-throw line and went just 10-of-25 (40 percent) from the field in the second half. The Hawks were outrebounded, 39-33—marking the first time this season that another team has outperformed New Paltz on the glass—and the home team committed 18 turnovers to Delaware Valley's 12.

New Paltz falls to 2-2 overall and squares off next with Hudson Valley foe Mount Saint Mary College at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the Kaplan Center in Newburgh, N.Y. Delaware Valley rises to 3-1 overall next entertains Arcadia University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Delaware Valley leaned on an outstanding performance from junior guard/forward Jay Donovan, who scored a career-high 30 points off 9-of-12 shooting from the field and 8-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc. Donovan also caused fits for the Hawks by grabbing four rebounds. Junior guard Francis Arnold dished out eight assists and added six steals, while junior center Steve Wade grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

For New Paltz, junior guard/forward Taylor Sowah (Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) scored a career-high 18 points off 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and 8-of-12 shooting from the charity stripe. Freshman forward Andrew Seniuk(Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) had a strong game in 21 minutes coming off the bench, posting 13 points and two rebounds. Senior guard Andrew Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Art and Design) doled out five assists, while graduate student guard Nick Taldi (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) and Sowah tied for the team-high in rebounds with six boards each.

New Paltz looked like it was in the driver's seat for the first 10 minutes of the contest, and a three-pointer by Seniuk gave the Hawks their largest lead of the day at 15-10 with a three-pointer at 11:25 of the first half. The Aggies began wresting the momentum away from New Paltz, and a made foul shot by junior guard Nick Sullivan gave Delaware Valley the 17-16 lead with 8:28 to play in the first stanza. The Aggies ended the half on a 5-0 spurt, which was comprised of a Donovan three-pointer and two made free throws by Sullivan.

After trailing 36-30 at the intermission, New Paltz answered with a trey by Taldi on the Hawks' first offensive possession of the second stanza to draw within three. In a span of less than two minutes, Delaware Valley swelled the edge to 10 thanks to a 7-0 spurt, and a layup by sophomore forward/center Chris Moran at 14:15 of the second half capped a 9-0 run that gave the Aggies a 17-point advantage. The Delaware Valley shooters continued to hit shots down the stretch, and New Paltz was unable to spark a rally from then on out.
