#24 Cortland Routs Oswego, 78-46, on Senior Night

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) led four double-figure scorers with 16 points as SUNYAC leader Cortland defeated Oswego, 78-46. The nationally 24th-ranked Red Dragons won their 11th straight game and improved to 19-3 overall and 13-2 in league play.

Winter finished 7-of-12 from the field with a pair of three-pointers. Senior Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, senior Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) recorded 11 points, six rebounds and three steals and sophomore Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 11 points, hit 4-of-6 shots and dished out a team-high five assists.

Senior Dan Sternkopf (Washingtonville) led the Red Dragons with eight rebounds and two blocked shots and senior Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) finished with seven points. Cortland's five seniors – Winter, Manning, Hefele, Sternkopf and Smith – were honored prior to the game. The Red Dragons have one remaining regular-season home game next Tuesday, Feb. 12, versus New Paltz at 8 p.m.

Mark Candelario led Oswego (16-6, 9-6 SUNYAC) with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field in six late minutes off the bench. Sean Michele and Hayden Ward scored seven points each and Chris Gilkes grabbed eight rebounds.

Oswego trailed by five, 19-14, after a Daniel Ross layup with 5:34 left in the first half. Cortland scored the next eight points on a Herron three-pointer, a Hefele jumper and a Winter three-pointer to take a 27-14 lead. Winter's three-pointer came from about 28 feet away with the shot clock expiring.

Cortland led 30-18 at halftime and quickly pushed the advantage to 21 at 41-20 with 14:22 left. Manning scored five points and Winter four during that run. Cortland's lead remained in the 20-29 point range most of the game from that point. Some late baskets, including two three-pointers by freshman Brendan Ferguson (New York/Xavier), created the final margin.

Cortland shot 52 percent from the field and has shot 50 percent or better in nine of the last 10 games. Oswego shot only 35 percent from the floor and made only 2-of-18 three-pointers (11 percent).
