Rally Complete, Beavers Stun Bloodhounds as Ortega and Johnston Score 19 Each

NEW YORK – Four Beaver starters reached double figures with one registering a double-double as the City College of New York, who trailed by as much as 14 in the second half, stunned John Jay College of Criminal Justice and defeated the Bloodhounds, 71-68, on Wednesday afternoon at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

John Jay, who entered the contest 7-1 in City University of New York Athletic Conference action (tied for first in the conference), was outscored by CCNY, 42-31 in the second half after leading by as much as 14 in the afternoon slate. The Beavers improved to 6-11 on the year and 2-7 in City University of New York Athletic Conference action while the Bloodhounds fall to 11-7 overall and 7-2 in CUNYAC play.

Jordan Ortega finished with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds to post his second double-double of the season while Terence Johnston, Paul Dail and Anthony Stephens recorded season high's in points with 19, 12 and 10, respectively.

After a made jumper by John Jay's Isaiah Holman with 10:45 remaining in the contest, the Beavers went on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 62 with 6:30 left to play. The Bloodhounds and CCNY traded points and the game was tied at 67 with 1:42 remaining.

Holman, who scored 30 points and surpassed 1,000 points for his career, hit one of two free throws to give John Jay a one-point lead with 1:08 left in action. Ortega followed with a jumper as CCNY took a one-point advantage with about 30 seconds remaining. A missed layup by the Bloodhounds led to John Jay fouling Ortega and the sophomore connected on both shots from the charity stripe to give CCNY a three-point lead with 13 seconds left to play.

A huge steal by Johnston gave the Beavers possession with just under 10 seconds before John Jay fouled Dail. Dail missed on both free throws, giving the Bloodhounds a chance to tie the game and force overtime. A corner three-pointer by Holman rimmed out just as the buzzer sounded as CCNY preserved it's three-point advantage and the win, 71-68.

CCNY continues City University of New York Athletic Conference action and hits the road to face Medgar Evers College on Friday at 8 p.m. The Beavers fell to the Cougars, 56-41, earlier this season (Nov. 30).
