YORK, Pa. – Gettysburg opened the second half on a 16-0 run to break the game open and defeat Farmingdale State College 71-48 in the first round of the York (Pa.) College Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Friday evening at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Bullets (4-6) will now take on Grove City College in the tournament championship game, starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Grove City beat York 65-60 in the night's opening game.

Senior Alex Zurn led the Bullets, scoring 19 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Classmate Derek Brooks shot 5-for-5 to contribute 11 points and a season-high five assists while freshman guard Sango Amolo tied a season-best with 10 points to go with season-highs of six rebounds and four assists.

Senior center AJ Matthews led the Rams (5-4) with 28 points and 13 rebounds.

Gettysburg turned in a perfect night at the foul line, going 15-for-15, while shooting a season-best 50.0 percent (8-for-16) from 3-point range. The Bullets also converted 20 Farmingdale State turnovers into 26 points and outscored the Rams 27-5 in bench points.

The Bullets trailed for most of the opening half after a 10-2 Farmingdale State run early in the game. The Rams led by as much as five (12-7) after a conventional 3-point play from Matthews with 18:03 to go.

Gettysburg answered with a 7-2 spurt, capped by five straight points from sophomore guard Sean Gordon, including a 3-pointer that tied it at 14-14 with 9:31 on the clock. It was the first of four ties over the next 3:54, the last coming on a Brooks jumper that made it 21-21 with 5:37 to go.

On the Bullets next possession, Zurn flushed an alley-oop dunk from Brooks, and Gettysburg would not trail the rest of the night. After the Rams tied it, Gordon put the Bullets in front for good when he canned a trey with 4:36 left to make it 26-23.

Gordon's 3-ball was the start of a 12-5 Gettysburg run to end the half, and a pair of free throws from senior center Benjamin Constable – playing in his first game of the year after studying in Egypt during the fall semester – with 0.1 seconds on the clock made it 35-28 at the half.

Four different players scored in Gettysburg's decisive run to open the second half, and Amolo capped the outburst with a jumper at the 12:53 mark to make it 51-28. Amolo also knocked down a 3-pointer during the run while Brooks and Zurn added five and points, respectively, during the surge.

Farmingdale managed to cut the deficit only to 17 the rest of the way, and Gettysburg pushed its lead to as much as 27 late in the game.

Gordon finished with eight points and four assists while sophomore Joe Emerusabe also tallied eight points.
