CHICAGO, Ill. - Southwestern dropped their second game of the opening weekend, falling 85-54 to #21 Washington University.
Southwestern never led in the game and found themselves battling a double-digit deficit with 7:32 to play in the first half. SU just couldn't seem to get the ball to fall as they made just six field goals in the first half and trailed 42-19 at the break.
An early second half run by Washington pushed the advantage to 31 with 14:20 to play in the game. Southwestern wasn't able to make up the ground despite doing a good job of handling Washington's pressure, committing just eight turnovers in the contest.
Two bench players led the way for the Pirates. Ryan Fees led with 12 points while Jake Schifani added in 10. Washington's Chris Klimek led all scorers with 14 points.
Southwestern was -20 in rebounds, pulling down just 13 boards on the afternoon, and shot 31.9% from the field.
The loss drops SU to 0-2 on the season while Washington improves to 2-0. The Pirates return to Texas to face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday evening in Belton, Texas before coming home for the first time to take on Wayland Baptist the following Tuesday.
