No. 21 Washington U. Routs Southwestern 85-54 to Improve to 2-0

Chicago, Ill., November 18, 2012 — The No. 21 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team wrapped up play in the University Athletic Association (UAA)/Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Challenge with a 85-54 victory over Southwestern University (Texas) Sunday afternoon in Chicago.

Washington University improves to 2-0 with the win, while Southwestern falls to 0-2. The Bears are 2-0 for the fourth-straight season and 12th time in head coach Mark Edwards 32 seasons on the Danforth Campus.

Junior forward Chris Klimek scored all of his game-high 14 points in the first half, and connected on 6-of-6 from the field. Senior center Robert Burnett added 11 points and was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field and 5-of-5 from the foul line, while sophomore forward Matt Palucki chipped in with 10 points on 6-of-6 free-throws.

The Bears jumped out to a 9-2 advantage early in the contest behind five points from Klimek, and then a three-pointer by junior guard Kevin Bischoff from the top of the key pushed the advantage to 16-7. Southwestern kept the deficit under double figures for most of the first half, but a 20-6 run in the final 6:57 gave WUSTL the 42-19 halftime lead.

Washington University shot 55.6 percent (15-27) from the field and 84.6 percent (11-13) from the foul line in the first half, and had 11 assists on 15 field goals.

Washington U. opened the second half with a 12-4 run, and pushed the advantage to 31 (54-23) following a three-pointer from the wing by junior guard Alan Aboona. The Bears took their largest lead of the game at 69-32 after a lay-up by freshman forward Brandon Staffeil with 9:28 to play.

The Bears shot 56.9 percent (29-51) from the field in the win, and connected on 22-of-27 (81.5 percent) from the foul line. Washington U. outrebounded Southwestern 41-21 and recorded 21 assists in the victory.

Ryan Fees (12 points) and Jake Schifani (10) points each scored in double figures for Southwestern.

Washington U. hosts Fontbonne University in its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. Fontbonne dropped its season opener at Central College (Iowa) Saturday, 80-66.

Bear Notebook: Washington U. has won both meetings between the two teams … The Bears had 15 of 16 players that appeared in a game score at least one point.
