A Conference Opening Win In 39:14

ST. PAUL, Minn. (11/30/11)-- Concordia led for all but :46 against Macalester on Wednesday in St. Paul and went on to beat the Scots 64-57. The Cobbers' defense held the Scots without a 3-point field goal in the game as CC won the conference opener for both teams. 

Concordia (2-3) trailed briefly at 4-3 before rattling off four straight points and then kept the lead for the remainder of the game as both teams struggled to shoot from outside the arc. The two squads were a combined 3-for-22 from 3-point range. Macalester was 0-for-5 from long range while CC went 3-for-17. The three made long distance shots proved to be the winning margin for the Cobbers.

The Cobbers shot 38.1% (24-for-63) from the floor but also struggled from the free throw line. CC connected on just 52.0% (13-for-25) of their foul shots and were 6-for-11 (54.5%) in the final 3:30 of play when they had a chance to put some distance between themselves and the Scots. 

Concordia had a 44-37 advantage in rebounding which included an 18-11margin in offensive rebounds.  The Cobbers only turned the ball over 10 times as compared to 12 for the Scots. CC used that slight edge to gain a 16-9 margin in points off turnovers. Concordia also had a 34-30 edge in points in the paint and a 16-9 in second chance points. 

Ebo Nana-Kweson paced the Cobbers with 18 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds. Jason Huus had eight points and 12 rebounds while Dewon McKenzie came up with 11 points and Johnathon Molina had a a team-high three assists. 

Macalester (0-4) had a pair of players with more than 15 points in the game. Sam Marshall led all scorers with 20 points and Pierce Peters added 16. Peters also had a game-high five blocks. Lamont Diggs had a team-high nine rebounds and also chipped in eight points.

Concordia will have their second road game to start the conference season when they play at Augsburg on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m.
