NEW YORK, N.Y. - Mathias Raggiotto converted on a layup with seven seconds left and the Lightning men survived two game-winning chances by the Bearcats before time expired to pull out an exciting 52-51 win and move to 4-0 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference.
Trailing by eight with 4:07 to play, Lehman received a free throw by Phil Ductan and baskets by Dwight Nangle and Patryk Odedina before two free throws and a three-pointer by Raggiotto gave the Lightning a 48-46 advantage with 57 seconds to go. Baruch's Chris Beauchamp connected from downtown on the ensuing possession to take the lead right back for the Bearcats.
Ductan answered immediately for the Lightning with a layup only to have C.J. Jurewicz-Johnson put Baruch back on top with just 20 seconds on the clock.
With the Lightning looking to regain the lead, Beauchamp committed a foul to send Ductan to the line. The Lehman junior missed both, but Raggiotto was in position to grab the offensive board and put home what would prove to be the game-winner in advance of last second attempts by Beauchamp and Brian McMahon.
The win capped a gutty effort by the Lightning, who led for much of the first half despite shooting only 29 percent from the field, thanks to a renewed offensive effort from Nangle. The Lightning senior tallied seven points to help Lehman to an 18-17 lead before a late 7-0 spurt by Baruch closed the half.
On the night Lehman was led by Raggiotto's 15 points and eight rebounds, while Nangle chipped in with a season-high 11 points. Lehman shot 58 percent in the second half to just 36 percent for the Bearcats, who were led by Beauchamps' 15 points.
Lehman has another tough task upcoming as it welcomes the CUNYAC defending champs, Medgar Evers, to the Monroe Athletic Center at New Roc City on Saturday.
