Vails, Holley Lead York to Victory Over Medgar Evers

More news about: York (N.Y.)

Vails carried the team in the first half of play, scoring 25 of the teams 38 first-half points on 8-14 shooting, while also swiping two steals.  The two teams went back-and-forth exchanging leads throughout most of the first half.  However, a late run put York up by seven going into the locker room (38-31).  The score was tied at 28-28 with 2:12 to play but York closed with a 10-3 run.  Six of those points came on free throws with the other two coming on lay-ups by Vails and Devon Lynch.

York continued to hold a tenuous lead for much of the second half until they opened up a ten-point cushion (55-45) following a three-point play by Holley.  However, just prior to that play Vails was forced out of the game because of a hand injury.

The impact of Vails being out was felt immediately as the Cougars closed to within three points a few minutes later when a Jarrel Deare lay-up made it 59-56 in favor of York with 7:12 to play.

However, foul trouble by the Cougars kept them from moving ahead.  Two of their starters would eventually foul out, while another ended the game with four fouls.

With just 1:20 remaining, York was still holding on to a two-point lead (67-65).  On the Cardinals' next three possessions Holley was fouled and sent to the line.  Holley hit the first two to make it a four-point game. On the next possession Holley was fouled again but missed the front end of a one-and-one this time.  However, York came up with a stop on defense and Holley was fouled a third time.  This time, he hit both to put York up by six (71-65) with 27 seconds to play.

Medgar Evers' Chris Cornish Jr. hit a three-pointer on the Cougars' next possession but Holley and Lynch added free throws on the final two York possessions to seal the win.

The Cougars were led by Winston Douglas, who grabbed 16 rebounds and scored 16 points in defeat.  Jovan Deare added 14 points and nine boards.   The loss drops Medgar Evers to 9-7, 0-3 in conference play.

In addition to Holley and Vails output for York, Omari Phipps added ten points, eight boards, three assists and three steals.   The Cardinals improve to 5-11, 1-2 in the CUNYAC with the victory.

York will return to action next Wednesday with a home game against John Jay College.  Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
