Brooklyn, NY- The Cougars fell to a tough York College Cardinals squad 74-71 on Wednesday January 11, 2012 at MEC. The Cougars fell to 9-7 Overall and 0-3 CUNYAC while the Cardinals improved to 5-11 Overall and 1-2 CUNYAC.
The game early on was close. Both teams were making shots and the scor was tied 3 times in the 1st 4 minutes. York extended their lead to 4pts before MEC tied the score at 14. In all 7 ties occurred in the 1st half. MEC took the lead with 9:39 left in the half, when Tony Sims hit a 3pt. shot. They will hold the lead for 5 minutes, until Tony Vails made a layup, giving York a 22-21 lead (4:50 left in 1st). After both teams scored which resulted in 2 more ties, York would pull away at 1:32, when Tony Vails made a layup. York would lead by 7 at the break 38-31.
York led in the 1st 3 minutes of the 2nd half, until Freshman Brian Johnson made a layup, tying the score at 40. After Johnson completed the 3pt. play, MEC took the lead 41-40. York regained the lead and never looked back. They would lead by as much as 10pts.
MEC was led in the loss from Winston Douglas. Douglas scored 16pts, grabbed 16 rebounds and recorded a steal. Jovan Deare scored 14pts, grabbed 9 rebounds, tallied 2 assists, and 2 steals. Deare is 31pts away from 1,000 career pts. Brian Johnson scored a career high 13pts and grabbed 5 rebounds. Chris Cornish, Jr. scored 10pts and handed out 2 assists.
York was led from Tony Vails. Vails scored a game high 30pts in just 25 minutes of action. Vails dislocated one his fingers early on in the 2nd half and wasn't able to return. William Holley added 16pts and Omari Phipps scored 10pts.
The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday January 14, 2012, when they take on Lehman College Lightning at New Roc City in New Rochelle, NY. Game time is set for 2pm.
