The No. 10 ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks started the game on a 5-0 run and never looked back as they handed the men's basketball team their first conference loss of the season 84-70 in Whitewater.
The Falcons trailed by as many as 18 throughout the game, but made a valiant effort in the second half in a comeback that brought them within seven. However, the Falcons could not find an answer for Whitewater's Chris Davis who poured in 31 points throughout the game en route to the 84-70 victory for the Warhawks, who are now 4-1 in WIAC play. The Falcons are also 4-1 in the WIAC and 10-4 overall.
Brian Kimble (Stevenson Ranch, CA, Coll. of Canyons JC) and Shane Manor (Altoona, WI, UW-Superior)continued their stellar play for UWRF. Kimble had a team-leading 19 points in a 7-14 shooting performance from the field and a team-leading six assists. He also added five rebounds and two steals. He now has scored 51 points in the teams' last three games.
Manor has also been on fire. He had 16 points throughout the game on 7-10 shooting from the field. He has scored 49 points in the last three games. He has also scored at least 12 points in every one of the Falcons' 14 games thus far.
Ollie White (Minnetrista, MN, Mound-Westonka HS) was just shy of a double double. He had 12 points and seven rebounds. Wade Guerin (Bloomington, MN, St. Croix Lutheran HS) also had seven rebounds to tie for the team lead.
The Falcons went into the half trailing 34-26 in a game that was a virtual tie on paper. Both teams had exactly 31 rebounds and made 27 shots from the field. The Falcons took a few more shots than Whitewater to finish 27-57 from the field for 47 percent. UWW was 27-51 for 53 percent. Neither team had a true advantage in the turnover battle. While the Falcons did have more with 14, UWW was not much better as they had 11.
Whitewater did hold a slight advantage in three-pointers. UWRF connected on 5-15 for 33 percent, whereas UWW was 9-23 for 39 percent. Six of those three-pointers came from Davis. Colin Utke (Mounds View, MN, Irondale HS) was 3-3 from three-point range for UWRF. Utke was also 3-4 from the field, missing just one shot the entire night. He finished with nine points total.
UWW also won the battle from the charity stripe. The Warhawks attempted 28 shots from the line, connecting on 21 of them for 78 percent. The Falcons went to the line 19 times, connecting on 11 for a meager 58 percent.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the WIAC. UWW improves to 13-1 and 4-1 in the WIAC. UWRF is 39-71 all time against the Warhawks.
"We didn't fo the things necessary to win on the road against a very good UWW team. We need to put this one behind us and get ready for La Crosse," said Falcon Head Coach Jeff Berkof.
Up next for the Falcons is a home contest against UW-La Crosse. Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. at the Karges Center on Wednesday, Jan. 11. The Falcons are 80-100 in the all time series against the Eagles, but UWRF is 4-0 at Karges so far this season.
