Pierce Peters (Jr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) pumped in 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but visiting Wisconsin-River Falls jumped out to an early lead and went on to defeat Macalester 77-58 for its fifth victory in a row.
The Falcons led 25-8 midway through the opening period, but the Scots played well after that against last season's WIAC runners-up. Macalester was within 12 points at 51-39 with 13:23 remaining in the game before UWRF went on a 7-0 run to go up by 19. River Falls was never threatened after that.
This was Mac's first game since Dec. 12. The Scots drop to 0-9 while River Falls improves to 9-2.
Wisconsin-River Falls out-shot the home team 48% to 36% and went 9-for-23 from beyond the three-point arc. The Falcons were credited with assists on 20 of their 29 baskets, getting five helpers from Shane Manor and Brian Kimble. Macalester out-scored UWRF 18-10 from the foul line. Turnovers were even at 19 apiece.
In addition to getting 25 points from Peters, the Scots picked up 12 points from Justin Wasik (So., Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South). Wasik has reached double digits in scoring in four straight games.
UW-River Falls had four players in double figures, led by Ollie White with 18 points. White went 8-for-9 from the floor.
Macalester returns to the court Monday (Jan. 2) when it hosts Carleton at 7:30 p.m. From here on out, it's all MIAC competition for the Scots.
