Spartans Fall to Maine-Farmington 95-79

FARMINGTON, Maine – The Castleton State College men's basketball team struggled from the field on Friday evening as they lost 95-78 against the University of Maine-Farmington in Dearborn Gymnasium. 

Junior Dammy Mustapha (Bellows Falls, VT) led the way for the Spartans with 14 points, going 5-for-8 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range and the charity stripe. Senior Greg Hughes (West Rutland, VT) tossed in 12, while Junior Mark Comstock (Rutland, VT) chipped in 10 respectively. Mustapha posted a double-double with 11 rebounds to go with his 14 points.

The Beavers were led by Sophomore Pet Sumner (Cramerton, NC) with 28 points on 12-for-20 shooting, including 4-for-10 from three-point range. Sophomore Ben Johnson (Manchester, ME) tossed in 16 and nine rebounds. Sophomore Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, ME) also chipped in 12.

Maine-Farmington shot an impressive 52 percent from the field compared to Castleton's 28.7 percent and hit better from long range (43.3 percent compared to Castleton 24.6 percent.) Though Castleton was outrebounded 58-51 overall, the Spartans did win the battle on the offensive glass, 22-13.

The Beavers came out firing on all cylinders in the first half, shooting 51 percent from the floor while containing Castleton's offense to just 28.6 percent from the floor. Castleton was led in the first half by Comstock, scoring all of his 10 while going 4-for-8 from the floor. The teams went into the locker room at halftime with the score 53-34 in the Beavers' favor.

The second half saw the Spartans outscore the Beavers 44-42. The Spartans were led in the half by Hughes with 12 points, shooting 3-for-7 from three-point range, and four steals. Mustapha scored nine of his 14 in the second half, shooting 3-for-4 from the floor, also hauling in seven rebounds.

The Beavers (1-3) go back on the hardwood tomorrow Dec. 3, hosting Green Mountain College, while the Spartans head to Thomas College tomorrow Dec. 3 for a 1 pm tip-off.
