FARMINGTON, Maine -- Pet Sumner (Cramerton, N.C.) poured a career-high 28 points to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to a 95-78 victory over Castleton State College in the North Atlantic Conference men's basketball opener for both teams.

The Beavers (1-3 overall, 1-0 NAC) earned their first win of the season and are scheduled to host Green Mountain College in NAC action Saturday at 1 p.m. The Spartans dropped to 1-3 (0-1) and are slated to visit Thomas College Saturday at 1 p.m.

With the Spartans averaging just 96 points per game, UMF shot 52.0 percent (39-75) to keep pace with Castleton's frenetic play, while limiting Castleton to a season-low point total and 28.7 percent (27-94) shooting.

Following Sumner, Ben Johnson (Manchester, Maine) provided 16 points and nine rebounds, while Andrew Dickey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) tallied 12 points and Joe McCloskey (Howland, Maine) supplied 10 points. A solid performance from Yusuf Iman (Auburn, Maine) included nine points, 10 boards and six assists, while Dan Kane (Bradford, Maine) led the team with seven assists.

Headlined by Johnson, the Beavers scored 52 of their 95 points in the paint.

Dammy Mustapha (Bellows Falls, Vt.) posted a double-double to lead Castleton with 14 points and 11 rebounds with Greg Hughes (West Rutland, Vt.) adding 12 points and Mark Comstock (Rutland, Vt.) pitching in 10 points.

Sumner nailed a 3-pointer to give the Beavers a 5-3 lead and kick off a 12-3 spurt that gave UMF a command it did not relinquish. Sumner split his game-high total between both halves.

The Beavers led 37-26 with 4:38 remaining in the half before scoring seven straight points, capped by a Kane runner, to build a 44-26 cushion. UMF took a 53-34 command into intermission.

UMF continued to keep the Spartans at a distance in the second half with a Johnson three-point play with 14:46 to play allowing the Beaver lead to balloon to 70-42. Castleton could not get closer than 19 points until a 12-3 run to close out the contest for the 95-78 final.
