Baldwin-Wallace Men's Basketball Team Defeats Allegheny (Pa.), 79-61

MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA  – Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Payne (Brunswick) scored a game-high tying 20 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team defeated Allegheny (Pa.) College, 79-61, tonight (Wednesday, November  30, 2011) in the David V. Wise Center. Payne has led  the Yellow Jackets in scoring in three of the four games and has scored in double figures in three of four, including scoring 20 points in two.

With the win,  B-W won its second straight game against an opponent from Pennsylvania and improved to 3-1 on the season and Allegheny falls to 2-5.

In addition to Payne for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore guard Kevin Krakowiak (Valley City/Holy Name) scored a season-best 15 points.  Sophomore post Aaron Selmek (Delaware/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) and junior forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/Walsh Jesuit) each scored 10 points.  The Gators were led by James Ness with a game-high tying 20 points.

Allegheny opened the scoring on a three-point shot at the 19:43 mark  of the first half. B-W responded with a 8-0 run that to take a 8-3 advantage at the 17:28 mark.   The run was sparked by Selmek with six points.

The Gators would then use a 5-2 run of their own to cut the lead down to two points (10-8) at 16:02 on a jumper by James Ness.  The two teams would go on runs of their own and Allegheny could only get as close as three points on two occasions with the last coming at the 6:14 mark as Ness hit a pair of free throws.

The Yellow Jackets would close out the first half by outscoring Allegheny 11-4 as freshman guard Jaron Crowe (Mentor) scored five points and B-W led 40-30 lead at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets would extend their lead to as many as 19 points in the second half on a the first career three-pointer and points  by sophomore post Skyler Simpson (Centerburg) with 31 seconds left.  The Gators would come only as close as seven points (47-40) on three-pointer by Devone McLeod at 14:48.  

B-W is back in action on Saturday, December 3 when the Yellow Jackets play host to defending OAC champion Marietta College in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.
