Centre falls 74-62 to Transylvania in men's basketball action

The Pioneers opened the game with five straight points to take an early lead, but Centre scored 17 of the next 22 points to go in front 17-10 with 11:04 left in the opening period.

Transylvania answered with a 14-3 run to take a 24-20 lead and would go on to finish the half with an eight-point lead (34-26) at the break.

After falling behind by 11 points early in the second half, the Colonels cut the lead to 46-40 with 12:33 remaining.

Centre would get no closer as the Pioneers scored 12 straight points to go ahead 58-40 before finishing with the 12-point victory.

The Colonels shot 47.8% (11-23) in the first half, but only 39.1% (9-23) in the second half to finish the game at 43.5%.

Senior Greg Ross (Cincinnati, Ohio) led Centre with 20 points and eight rebounds in 36 minutes. Freshman Josh Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) added 17 points and five rebounds, while senior Jeff Mullaney (Louisville, Ky.) finished with 10 points and five assists.

Transylvania shot 50.9% (27-53) from the field, including six of 15 (40.0%) from beyond the three-point arc. The 50.9% against the Colonels is the highest shooting percentage by an opponent since January 23, 2010 when Southwestern University finished at 51.0%.

Brandon Rash led all scorers with 28 points on 11 of 16 shooting. Ethan Spurlin scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Chris Owens recorded 12 points and seven rebounds.

Centre will next travel to Franklin, Ind. to play its third straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) team in Franklin College Saturday, Nov. 26. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
