Rash's 28 key Pioneers over Centre, 74-62

LEXINGTON, Ky. -  Transylvania broke open a tight game in the second half Tuesday and cruised to a 74-62 decision over Centre in men's college basketball action at the Beck Center.

Transy, playing for the first time in a week, improved to 2-0 while the Colonels are 2-2.

The Pioneers, who never trailed after a layup by Ethan Spurlin made it 26-24 with 5:03 left in the first half, received a career-high 28 points from Brandon Rash, who was 11 of 16 from the field. Spurlin had a double double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Chris Owens was also in double figures with 12 points to go with seven rebounds.

Transy shot 51 percent from the field for the game, including 55 percent in the second half when its advantage reached as many as 18 points. Centre was at 43.5 percent overall, a figure that included an effort of seven of 22 from three point range.

Greg Ross topped the visitiors with 20 points while Josh Karsner added 17. Ross was also the top rebounder with eight. The Pioneers had a 33-23 edge on the boards and committed just 10 turnovers to 13 for the Colonels.

Transy outscored Centre 34-10 in the paint and also had a 10-0 advantage in second-chance scoring.

Centre led early in the game before the Pioneers came back to take a 34-26 advantage at intermission. Spurlin and Rash combined to sink 10 of 16 shots from the field in the first 20 minutes, with each netting 11 points. Owens was three for three from the field for seven points as Transy shot 48 percent from the field.

The home team also had a 17-13 edge on the boards. Centre was led in the half by Greg Ross and Josh Karsner, each with eight points. Centre also shot well, canning 11 of 23 for 47 percent, a total that included a three for 10 effort from long range.

Rash bested his previous career-high by one point. He also had four rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 36 minutes of action.

The Pioneers are back in action on Monday when they travel to Thomas More for a 7 p.m. contest.
