FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of Maine-Farmington closed the final 5:04 of the first half with a 12-0 run to gain a 10-point advantage at intermission and went on for a 66-51 non-conference men's basketball victory over the University of New England Saturday afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.

Seniors Andrew Dean (Gorham, Maine) and Eric Taylor (Oakland, Maine) led the way for the Beavers (2-5), who snapped a three-game losing streak to the Nor'easters. Dean notched a team-high 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from deep, while Taylor recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

With his first bucket of the game at 14:26 of the opening period, Taylor also became the 23rd player in UMF history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark.

The Beavers finished with positive margins in rebounds (37-22) and bench scoring (23-3). For the game, UMF shot 47 percent (24 of 51) from the floor.

UNE received a game-high 19 points from junior Marcus Winn (Austin, Texas), who made 5-of-9 three-point attempts. Senior Chas Rentrope (Peoria, Ariz.) added 12 points to go with seven boards and five steals. Junior Ryan Knotek (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) also had 12 points for Big Blue, which converted 18-of-48 (38 percent) field goal attempts.

The Nor'easters led for most of the initial 15 minutes, up by as many as five (21-16) with 9:02 to play in the first frame. The edge was two with just over five remaining in the half, before 12 unanswered points from the Beavers left the hosts up 34-24 heading into the break.

UMF pushed the advantage to 19 (50-31) midway through the second, only to see UNE put together a small rally. Big Blue scored 17 of the next 21 points to trim the deficit to six (54-48) with 3:37 to play. Winn had eight points during the run.

Dean fired right back on the next two possessions for the Beavers, canning a trey on each trip to restore the cushion to double digits.

UMaine Farmington returns to action Sunday when it hosts UMaine Presque Isle at 3 p.m.

The Nor'easters (2-8) are off until January 2, when nationally-ranked Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) visits Biddeford for the Jim Beaudry Classic.
