BIDDEFORD, Maine --- Kyle Donovan scored a collegiate-high 20 points and Mike Russell moved just nine points away from being the 35th player in Colby College men's basketball history to reach 1,000 points as the Mules took a 71-58 non-conference win at University of New England on Tuesday night.
Donovan, who battled injury problems for much of last year, was 8-for-8 from the field at one point and finished 8-for-10. Meanwhile, Russell had game-highs of 21 points and 15 rebounds to go along with four assists. He shot 10-for-15 from the field and moved his career numbers to 991 points and 675 rebounds just four games into his senior season.
Colby (2-2) also received 11 points and eight assists from guard Christian Van Loenen. Ben Foreman chipped in with six points and five assists, while Eric Beaulieu added six points and six rebounds.
The Mules took a 38-29 halftime lead and still led 53-43 with 9:58 to play. Colby went on a 6-0 run thanks to a tip-in by Beaulieu, two free throws by Donovan, and then a jumper by Donovan for a comfortable 59-43 lead.
Colby shot 56 percent (28-for-50) from the field and had 21 team assists.
UNE (1-6) received 18 points from Chas Rentrope and 14 by Marcus Winn.
The Mules will play at University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday at 7 p.m.
